Peter McCarroll grew up in New Zealand where his father and grandfather were both accountants. He studied accounting at university while working for his father, went on to train at Deloitte and eventually built his own practice – Fuel Accountants. Will AI replace accountants? The US Bureau of Labor Statistics data from 2026 gives the clearest answer yet. Accountants and auditors are projected to GROW 5% through 2034. Bookkeeping clerks are projected to DECLINE 6%. AI is not replacing the profession. It is splitting it.
The roles built on repetitive rules-based processing – data entry, transaction coding, reconciliation, invoice matching – are being automated. AI already codes bank transactions with 85 to 95 percent accuracy and automates roughly 80 percent of routine bookkeeping work. The roles built on judgment, advisory, scenario planning and client relationships are growing.
As Peter explains – 85% of what accountants call judgment is really the cumulative experience of knowledge and rule following. And AI has already taught the world that knowledge is now free. This year it is teaching the world that rule following can be automated.
Peter’s vision from May 2024 is one of the most powerful analogies in this episode. He saw himself sitting on the side of the road crying – his business in tatters – while a truck drove away. That truck was AI. And in that moment he made a decision. He was not going to be the person sitting on the side of the road. He was going to drive the truck.
More specifically – he was going to be riding on top of the tank going “yee-haw.”
That decision led him to spend the next two years mastering AI implementation in accounting. And his message to every accountant and business owner in 2026 is clear. Will AI replace accountants who embrace it? No. Will AI replace accountants who ignore it? Effectively yes – because their clients will find accountants who use it.
One of the most powerful moments in this episode is when Peter describes a locksmith client whose revenue was declining. Using AI-powered prompts from his library, Peter helped the locksmith create three ideal client personas for the three types of customers his team serves most frequently. The locksmith then used those personas to create an inspection checklist his team could run on every service visit – identifying additional work that could be done for each type of client. The result was 25% revenue growth in three months. Not from new marketing. Not from new clients. From serving existing clients better on visits they were already making.
