Complete the sentence, “the year is 20xx, and I am…” Do you want to work less? Would you like to be in a position to provide more income to support your dream life-style? Do you want to be able to spend more time with your family and friends? Do you want to be able to take a long vacation? Maybe you want to be in a position to exit your business…
The business goals must support the life you want to live. Where does your business need to be in three years to enable your future life?
After that, we can look at the bigger picture:
What is your Why? Why do you do what you do? Why does your company exist? What drives you?
Then we move on to your Vision. What impact will you and your company have? What is the goal of your operation? What benefit is it for your primary customers? What is the ultimate impact that your organization will have for your customers, your employees, in your community, in the world, for any key stakeholder?
Next we tackle your company Values. That's your culture. What behaviors are most important for you and your employees to display consistently? Most companies compile a list of platitudes - words like integrity, teamwork, customer service - and call those their values. While those words are nice, they don't really adequately describe your company's culture which is how you want your employees to behave on a day-to-day basis.
Now we'll use the future to plan the present. Take the 3 year target from the previous step and work backward to create two-year goals and goals for the coming year. This is likely to yield a very different result from what the normal planning process yields.
