Is franchising right for me? That is the question Jeff Shafritz has been helping people answer for more than 30 years. In Episode 157 of The Profit Minds Podcast, Dr. Steven Kirch sits down with Jeff Shafritz, founder of Franchise Guidance, to break down the fit-first framework that every aspiring franchise owner needs to understand before signing anything.
Jeff has been on all three sides of franchising: the franchisor side at The Athlete’s Foot, where he led franchise development for the Americas; the franchisee side, where he opened and profitably exited his own fitness franchise; and the matchmaking side, where he has spent 20-plus years guiding corporate executives, downsized professionals, and existing business owners toward the right fit.
In this episode, Dr. Kirch and Jeff Shafritz walk through the complete framework for answering the franchise question honestly. Here is what is covered:
Jeff Shafritz did not set out to spend his career in franchising. He wanted to work in sports. But a chance connection at a college internship led him to The Athlete’s Foot, where he spent 9 years handling franchise development for the Americas. After leaving, he made a deliberate decision: instead of selling one franchise, he wanted to help people find the right one. He also became a franchisee himself, opening a fitness franchise that he ran for 5 years before profitably exiting.
That combination of experiences — franchisor, franchisee, and advisor — gives Jeff a perspective that most franchise consultants simply do not have. He has built Franchise Guidance on a single principle: fit over hype. His 90-minute assessment digs into goals, skill sets, investment criteria, lifestyle preferences, and risk tolerance before a single franchise is ever recommended. He has spent more than two decades doing this work, and his services cost franchisee candidates nothing. He is paid by the franchise company only when a successful match is made. The franchise fee is the same regardless, because the FTC heavily regulates franchise pricing.
The most common mistake aspiring franchise owners make is chasing the trending brand. Jeff sees it constantly. Everyone at every cocktail party wants to know what the hottest franchise is right now. However, that question misses the point entirely. The franchise has to fit who you are, how you lead, what drains you, and what gets you up in the morning. A franchise that makes someone else wealthy can destroy someone else entirely, and the difference has nothing to do with the brand. It has everything to do with fit.
Jeff makes this concrete with a simple example. He is certain there are amazing franchises that, if he tried to operate them, would fail. Not because the business is bad, but because the business requires skills and a daily focus that does not match how he is wired. This is why his process begins with the person, not the opportunity. By the time a franchise is presented to a candidate, it has already been filtered through goals, strengths, investment range, territory availability, and lifestyle requirements.
Furthermore, he introduces a distinction that changes how most people think about franchise ownership: you are not buying the product the franchise sells. You are buying the operating system. If you do not believe in the system, if you would want to change how everything is done, then you should start your own business instead. The people who thrive in franchising are those who recognize the value of having a proven playbook and are willing to execute it.
One of the most timely discussions in this episode covers what AI displacement means for franchise investing. As Dr. Kirch and Jeff both note, a significant number of white-collar jobs are going away over the next several years. Software engineers, accountants, and other knowledge workers may find that their specific role no longer exists in its current form. However, many of those people have something far more valuable than a job title: leadership experience, management skills, business development ability, and the financial literacy to read a P&L.
Those are exactly the skills that make someone a strong franchise owner. And here is the part that often surprises people: AI is not threatening most franchise categories. AI cannot paint your house, put a roof on, clean commercial spaces, cut hair, or run a fitness studio. In fact, AI is actively enhancing those businesses by streamlining their systems, improving scheduling and CRM tools, and helping franchisees produce more with fewer people. As a result, Jeff sees a substantial opportunity window opening in the next several years, particularly for corporate professionals who have been displaced and are ready to build something of their own.
